The International Center for Human Sciences (CISH) – UNESCO, Byblos organized in collaboration with the Research and Strategic Studies Center at the Lebanese Armed Forces, a conference on August 10, 2023, on “Ocean governance and Maritime Awareness”.
The sessions hosted experts to further discuss issues of maritime delimitation, hydrographic activities, the United Nations Convention on the law of the sea, and the role of the International Maritime Organization and the UNESCO in relation to underwater cultural heritage.
During the opening speech, Dr. Darina Saliba Abi Chedid, Director of CISH-UNESCO highlighted the significance of further learning about ocean governance, especially under the framework of the UN Convention as the latter provides an integrated legal framework which establishes the main mechanisms of using the waters of the seas and oceans in the world. It also guarantees the preservation of environmental and marine resources, as well as the fair use of those resources, and addresses issues related to the sovereignty of states over the seas and oceans.

استضاف المنظمون خبراء لمناقشة قضايا ترسيم الحدود البحرية، والأنشطة الهيدروغرافية، واتفاقية الأمم المتحدة لقانون البحار، ودور المنظمة البحرية الدولية واليونسكو فيما يتعلق بالتراث الثقافي المغمور بالمياه.

خلال الكلمة الافتتاحية ، سلطت الدكتورة دارينا صليبا أبي شديد ، مديرة المركز ، الضوء على أهمية التوعية حول حوكمة المحيطات، لا سيما في إطار اتفاقية الأمم المتحدة حيث توفر الأخيرة إطارًا قانونيًا متكاملًا يحدد الآليات الرئيسية لإدارة مياه البحار والمحيطات في العالم. كما تتضمن الإتفاقية أساسات الحفاظ على الموارد البيئية والبحرية، فضلاً عن الاستخدام العادل لتلك الموارد، وتتناول القضايا المتعلقة بسيادة الدول على البحار والمحيطات
